BOOTH #1236
Donation: Daniel Winkler became a full time blade smith in 1988. He created the knives and axes that were featured in the 1992 award winning movie “The Last of the Mohicans”. It was his craftsmanship that caught the eye of Kevin Holland. Daniel hand forged an axe for Kevin to carry on missions during his time as a SEAL, thus began a friendship and nod that continues to this day. In recent years he has had the honor of working with Special Operations Forces of the United State Military, as well as Allied Forces from around the world. This involvement prompted the establishment of the Winkler Knives II product line. The knives and axes in the WKII Collection are all custom made in his shop through the stock removal process. All designs featured in Winkler Knives II are born of warriors’ experience. He aspires to the same standards of excellence in craftsmanship as with his hand forged work.
“The Operator is the result of a question asked of veteran Kevin Holland who spent more than nineteen years serving as both a Navy SEAL and Army SOF Operator. Daniel Winkler asked Kevin what he would consider to be the perfect knife based on his experience. The 8.5” fixed blade knife is the result of the combined knowledge of the two men - Kevin as a skilled Operator and Daniel as a skilled Knifemaker. The knife features a tapered tang and 4” blade with a distal taper. Designed for quick action and deep penetration, the knife comes with a black or brown leather sheath that can be worn horizontally or vertically. Available only with Caswell No-Glare finish. The walnut handle is unique as it was crafted from the walnut stock of an enemy combatant’s weapon. During his decades of deployments with both the Navy and the Army, Kevin would notice that the stocks on many weapons used by The Taliban and Al Qaida resembled the wood on the handles of the axes and knives Daniel made. Kevin was able to procure some of that “special walnut” to be used as handle material for the knife on display before you today.”
