NUNIVAK ISLAND MUSKOX PERMIT SX001/003
Between the years of 1935-1936 thirty-one white faced muskoxen from Greenland were released in Game Management Unit 18 on Nunivak Island. This release was the first step toward reintroducing muskox to Alaska. The Nunivak Island population grew slowly until approximately 1958 and then began a period of rapid population growth. The first state-sanctioned hunting season was held in 1975 and the population has since maintained between 400 and 750 animals; a healthy density for the habitat available on Nunivak Island. Periods of low natural mortality and absence of predators have resulted in the presence of older individuals within the herd and contribute to the excellent trophy quality of the Nunivak muskox population. The most recent population survey indicated that the adult bull to cow ratio was 105:100 meaning great opportunity for hunters to observe and harvest a mature bull on their hunt.
Nunivak bull DX001 is open September 1-30, and DX003 is open February 1 through March 15th. This split season allows the hunter to choose between two different hunt styles. The September hunt is primarily boat or ATV based and requires more walking than the winter hunt which is conducted almost entirely from snow machines. Success rate for both seasons is nearly 100% for hunters who base their hunt out of Mekoryuk (the only village on the island). Mekoryuk is home to two guides and three transporters that are native to Nunivak Island. These individuals know the island and its wildlife very well contributing to further hunt success.
