New Mexico Desert or Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Permit
New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is pleased to have selected the Wild Sheep Foundation to auction a special bighorn permit. As authorized by state law, the Bighorn Sheep Enhancement Program will receive 90% of the proceeds for projects to benefit bighorn sheep with 10% of the proceeds retained by the Wild Sheep Foundation. Anyone, including previous special permit holders, may submit a bid to obtain the 2012 special bighorn permit unless their hunting privileges have been revoked. The permit may be transferred by the successful bidder to an individual qualified to hunt.
The successful bidder may hunt any bighorn population open for hunting in New Mexico.  At time of press, these include: desert bighorn in the Peloncillo Mountains (Unit 27), Rocky Mountain bighorn in the Turkey Creek/San Francisco River herds (Units 16B, 22, 23, 24), Pecos Wilderness (Unit 45), Latir Wilderness (Unit 53 north of NM 38) or Wheeler Peak Wilderness (Unit 53 south of NM 38). Hunt dates run from August 1 through December 31 except in Wheeler Peak where the hunt dates are August 1-10 and September 1 through December 31.  There may be 5 additional desert bighorn sheep units open for the first time ever, pending delisting of desert bighorn sheep from the state threatened and endangered species list.  This will be determined prior to the auction.
The Peloncillo Mountains of southwestern New Mexico produced the archery state record desert bighorn in 2007. This 178 6/8 B&C ram harvested by Jim Hens is the new Pope & Young World Record! The tremendous desert bighorn ram harvested by Russ Young in 2006 scored 188 2/8 B&C, and followed the 2005 ram that scored 182 6/8 B&C. Fifteen of the last twenty desert rams harvested in New Mexico have been Boone and Crockett record book rams! The Wheeler Peak Wilderness produced the state record Rocky Mountain bighorn ram in 2005, a 198 4/8 ram. There have been 5 rams scoring >190 points taken in Wheeler Peak. Three Boone & Crockett record book Rocky Mountain bighorn rams were harvested in Wheeler Peak in 2010. For additional information, contact bighorn sheep biologists Eric Rominger (505) 476-8045 or Elise Goldstein (505) 476-8041 or visit with them at their booth.
